Ranked the region’s number one infrastructure priority by the Regional Development Authority, this project involves construction of a new bridge over the Hunter River and 3.8km road duplication in Newcastle.
The project is critical to supporting local economic and community development through upgrading of one of Newcastle’s key corridors, connecting a major industrial centre, the Port of Newcastle and the CBD.
Over 33,000 vehicles use the corridor each day, including over 3000 heavy vehicles. WBHO is prioritising careful traffic management to maintain flow and safety while progressing works to schedule. In addition to the new two-lane bridge on the western side of the existing bridge and duplicated road, the project will also deliver 2.5-metre shoulders along Cormorant Road to provide safer cycling conditions. Works are scheduled for completion in late 2018.
